Book Jacket Design

The first job I had after graduating college was at Random House Publishing.I did the mechanicals for the book flaps and such. After a bit, I managed to talk them into giving me some manuscripts in hopes I could then design the jackets. I ended up designing about a dozen jackets in the brief time I was there.

As a young kid in New York, it was thrilling to walk by a Doubleday or Scribner’s or any of the now defunct bookstores on 5th Avenue and see a book I had designed the jacket for in the window.

Now, 50 years later, I have designed a book jacket for a dear friend’s first book, The Saltwater Highway by Tony Whitworth. An interesting, well written, nonfiction book about his 50 years in the international dry bulk shipping business. Congratulations Tony, on your first of many.
